AECOM seeks a motivated Field Biologist for part-time, on-call employment in the Southern/Central California and Nevada desert regions.
This position supports natural resource projects in the Mojave Desert. Focus is on biological surveys, regulatory compliance, primarily for desert tortoise and/or burrowing owl.
Potential to assist with vegetation mapping, wildlife assessments, habitat restoration, and permitting implementation.
This is a field-based, fully remote position requiring on-site assignments.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Training/experience conducting surveys for listed species.
- Experience conducting desert tortoise, burrowing owl, desert kit fox, and American badger surveys.
- Knowledge of native and non-native fauna/flora.
- Experience with other special-status species surveys.
- Experience with avian nesting surveys and mortality monitoring.
- Support project execution (pre-construction surveys, construction monitoring)
- Environmental compliance monitoring experience.
- Desert Tortoise Monitor approval by USFWS and CDFW required.
- Data collection/analysis using electronic tools.
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team in challenging terrain.
Minimum Requirements:
- Bachelor’s degree in a related field (biology, ecology).
- 2 years experience in desert environments.
- Valid US Driver's license.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Consulting experience is preferred.
- Familiarity with southern California/Nevada wildlife and plants.
- Experience with electronic data collection tools (Fulcrum, Field Maps)
- Experience with USFWS biological opinions and CDFW incidental take permits.
- Experience with special status species.
- 10(A)(1)(a) permit for federally listed species.
- Ability to drive a 4-wheel drive vehicle.
- Experience on construction projects (transmission, utility).
- Familiarity with regulations (Endangered Species Act, NEPA, CEQA, Clean Water Act).
- Excellent communication skills.
US Citizenship is required.
