AECOM is seeking a Senior Archaeologist to join their Cultural Resources practice.
This part-time, on-call position reports to the Pacific Northwest Archaeology Group Director and supports coordination with AECOM's cultural resources teams in the Portland, Oregon office.
- Manages projects with large-scale field efforts (survey, testing, data recovery, monitoring) and intensive schedules.
- Manages and executes archival research, technical report writing, state and federal archaeological permitting, data collection/compilation, and GIS mapping.
- Works independently and as part of a larger team.
- Supervises personnel (field, office, lab), as needed.
- Performs project management duties (forecasting, tracking, accounting updates, invoicing, progress reports, scheduling).
- Reviews contracts for scope, fee, schedule, deliverables, and contractual obligations.
- Develops work breakdown structures for work control.
- Monitors and analyzes project costs, commitments, and changes, taking corrective action.
- Liaises and develops positive relationships with clients and stakeholders.
- Understands state/federal environmental regulatory frameworks (NEPA, National Historic Preservation Act).
- Organizes data efficiently.
- Handles multiple tasks, communicating priorities to the Cultural Resources Regional Lead.
- Serves as primary contact for clients and resource agencies.
- Performs client management duties (status meetings, milestone check-ins, daily interfacing).
- Supports multiple projects, including occasional travel.
- Demonstrates innovation and problem-solving skills.
- Supports career development of individuals in the practice.
- Prepares competitive proposals and participates in client interviews.
- Contributes to practice growth through business development.
Minimum Requirements:
- BA/BS in Anthropology, Archaeology, History, or related field.
- 6 years of relevant experience or demonstrated equivalency in historic/prehistoric archaeology and cultural resources management.
- Valid driver's license.
- Willingness to travel and conduct fieldwork in the Pacific Northwest.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Master's/PhD in Anthropology, Archaeology, History, or related field
- 10+ years of experience
- 3+ years supervisory experience
- Meets Secretary of Interior's professional qualification standards in Archaeology
- Pacific Northwest experience
- Experience with Sections 106 and 110 of the National Historic Preservation Act
- Experience with career development of junior/mid-level archaeologists
- Advanced knowledge in specialty areas (lithic/faunal analysis, osteology, historical archaeology)
- Excellent technical writing, verbal, and written communication skills
- Experience supervising large/multiple crews
- Experience with interdisciplinary teams
- Proven ability to lead proposals and win work
- Knowledge of regional/local regulations
- US Citizenship (due to nature of work)
