AECOM seeks a highly motivated Senior Field Biologist for immediate part-time, on-call employment in Southern/Central California and Nevada desert regions. This position supports numerous natural resource projects focusing on biological surveys, compliance monitoring, primarily for desert tortoise and/or burrowing owl. Potential for vegetation mapping, wildlife assessments, habitat restoration, and permitting is available. This is a field-based, fully remote position requiring local presence for extended periods, linked to a Southern California office.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Experience with surveys of listed species local to Southern California and Nevada desert regions (desert tortoise, burrowing owl, Mojave fringe-toed lizard, Mojave ground squirrel).
Responsibilities may include:
- Lead protocol & pre-construction desert tortoise surveys & monitoring
- Lead & conduct focused burrowing owl surveys & monitoring, including passive relocation
- Lead & conduct focused American badger & desert kit fox surveys & monitoring
- Conduct general wildlife &/or botanical surveys, including vegetation & habitat mapping
- Identify & record native & non-native fauna/flora
- Conduct other special-status species surveys
- Conduct avian species nesting surveys & avian mortality monitoring
- Support project execution (pre-construction surveys, construction monitoring)
- Assist with environmental compliance monitoring
- Provide oversight of restoration crews & vegetation performance monitoring
- Utilize electronic data collection (Fulcrum, Field Maps, etc.)
Authorized Desert Tortoise Biologist Requirements:
- Thorough knowledge of desert tortoise behavior, natural history, & ecology
- Demonstrates substantial field experience & training in activities that may result in "take" of the desert tortoise
- Locate, identify, and report tortoise sign
- Handle & temporarily hold desert tortoises
- Relocate/translocate desert tortoises
- Excavate burrows, reconstruct burrows, unearth/relocate tortoise eggs
- Review & approve monitor activities
- Directly supervise monitors & train on protecting tortoises during projects
- Be familiar with project assessments, biological opinions, & incidental take permits
- Direct proper implementation of protective measures
- Record & report noncompliance
- Halt project activities per biological opinion or permit
