AECOM is seeking a highly motivated Senior Field Biologist for immediate part-time, on-call employment in the southern/central California and Nevada desert regions.
This position supports natural resource projects in the Mojave Desert. Focus is on biological surveys and regulatory compliance monitoring, primarily for desert tortoise and/or burrowing owl. Potential for vegetation mapping, wildlife assessments, habitat restoration, and permitting.
Responsibilities include (subset based on experience):
- Lead protocol and pre-construction desert tortoise surveys and monitoring.
- Lead and conduct burrowing owl surveys and monitoring, including passive relocation.
- Lead and conduct American badger and desert kit fox surveys and monitoring.
- Conduct general wildlife and/or botanical surveys, including vegetation and habitat mapping.
- Identify and record native and non-native fauna and/or flora in the field.
- Conduct special-status species surveys.
- Conduct avian species nesting surveys and avian mortality monitoring.
- Support project execution, including pre-construction surveys and construction monitoring.
- Assist with environmental compliance monitoring.
- Provide oversight of restoration crew work and restoration vegetation performance monitoring.
- Perform other related duties.
- Utilize electronic data collection methods; manage, interpret, and analyze data.
- Conduct monitoring and survey fieldwork as part of a team and independently.
- Work under supervision of a senior project manager.
- Ensure tasks stay on schedule and budget.
- Elevate compliance concerns.
- Provide clarification of project requirements.
- Promote safety culture and adherence to Safe Work Plans.
- Authorized Desert Tortoise Biologist responsibilities include locating, identifying, and reporting tortoise signs; handling and temporarily holding tortoises; relocating/translocating them; excavating burrows; reconstructing burrows; unearthing and relocating eggs; reviewing and approving desert tortoise monitors; directly supervising them; training in tortoise protection; and familiarity with project assessments, biological opinions, and incidental take permits.
Minimum Requirements:
- Bachelor's degree in related field (biology, ecology).
- 4 years relevant experience in desert environments.
- Valid driver's license.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Prior consulting experience.
- Experience conducting biological surveys.
- Field experience with special status species in southern California or Nevada.
- 10(A)(1)(a) permit for listed species.
- 4-wheel drive vehicle experience.
- Experience on construction-associated projects.
- Familiarity with regulatory requirements.
- Desert tortoise surveys and monitoring experience.
- Burrowing owl surveys experience.
- Experience implementing USFWS biological opinions and CDFW incidental take permits.
- Completion of Introduction to Mojave Desert Tortoise course.
- Familiarity with the Desert Tortoise Field Manual.
- Knowledge of southern California/Nevada wildlife and plant species.
- Flexibility.
- Leadership and diplomacy skills.
- Experience with electronic data collection (Fulcrum, Field Maps, etc.).
US Citizenship required.
