Full-Time ASF Infrastructure Sysadmin

The Apache Software Foundation (ASF) seeks an experienced Infrastructure Systems Administrator to contribute to the stability, security, and growth of its globally-distributed infrastructure.

Key Responsibilities

• Administer Ubuntu-based Linux/Unix systems (installation, upgrades, patches, security, performance tuning).
• Monitor, maintain, and troubleshoot critical infrastructure services (DNS, email, backups, mailing lists, CI/CD).
• Evaluate and manage responses to alerts.
• Maintain production-scale backup and restore tools.
• Develop monitoring and compliance frameworks for backups.
• Maintain Puppet-based Infrastructure-as-Code and expand Ansible usage.
• Develop Puppet modules and Hiera YAML orchestration.
• Develop Ansible playbooks for system configuration and orchestration.
• Manage Atlassian Jira and Confluence.
• Manage self-developed services (primarily Python/gunicorn).
• Manage Opensearch logging and analytics platform.
• Manage Datadog deployment.
• Maintain Python code for automation.
• Manage Java webapp servers and internal tooling (Apache Maven, Sonatype Nexus, JFrog Artifactory, Jenkins-based CI).
• Administer, maintain, and optimize Git, GitHub, and Subversion.
• Implement and maintain security best practices.
• Conduct regular audits and respond to incidents.
• Interact with ASF project communities, addressing support tickets.
• Maintain and support mailing lists.
• Communicate effectively in written and spoken English, producing clear documentation.

Qualifications

• Minimum 3-5 years of Linux/Unix system administration experience.
• Solid background in Python for system administration.
• Experience with configuration automation/Infrastructure-as-Code.
• Experience configuring and maintaining continuous integration systems.

Nice-to-haves

• CI/CD pipeline and container experience (Docker, LXD, Kubernetes).
• Familiarity with programming languages and paradigms (Java, Python).

• Elastic/Opensearch experience.
• Performance monitoring/alerting experience (PagerDuty, Datadog, Grafana, Prometheus).
• Java application experience.
• AWS, Azure, or other cloud infrastructure experience.
