Director of Engineering, MediaWiki
Accountable for MediaWiki Engineering Group.
Active participant in strategic decision making for Product and Technology department and across Wikimedia movement.
Teams build, maintain, and improve MediaWiki, the software platform for Wikipedia and sister projects, used by hundreds of millions monthly.
Manages ~25 engineers, including experienced Principal engineers and managers.
Reports to Senior Director of Engineering, shares responsibility with Director of Product.
Develops deep understanding of the community and its needs.
Responsibilities:
- Lead teams building, maintaining, and improving MediaWiki.
- Demonstrate values, foster positive work environment.
- Hire, coach, develop engineering managers and senior contributors.
- Engineer delivery for MediaWiki Engineering group.
- Collaborate with Director of Product on roadmaps and technical strategy.
- Participate with senior managers for strategic plans, alignment, and problem solving.
- Participate in organizational development for projects, programs, and people.
- Plan, staff, budget, and manage expenses for MediaWiki Engineering.
- Collaborate with Engineering leaders for production environment stability.
Skills and Experience:
- Leading teams managing software engineering lifecycle.
- Experience leading or managing a backend platform organization.
- Managing organizational interaction with volunteer contributors.
- Building and leading diverse, multi-national, remote-first teams.
- Proven success in engineering process and product lifecycle.
- Experience managing managers.
- Ability to travel up to 2-3 times a year.
- Ability to work flexible hours.

Additional Experience (preferred):
- Open source project contribution/management.
- Open governance (IETF, W3C, etc.) experience.
