Summary: Reporting to the Division Vice President, Workforce Structures, the Director, Projects is responsible for the overall strategy, planning, and execution of all construction projects. This role ensures projects are completed on time, within budget, and to the highest quality standards. The Director leads the Projects team by developing, mentoring, and training new Project Managers and Coordinators.Key responsibilities include defining project requirements and scope, acquiring resources, and supervising the project management team. The Director oversees all project management activities, including planning, scheduling, budgeting, and implementation. They collaborate with internal teams, stakeholders, and clients to ensure project success, monitor project performance, identify areas for improvement, and prepare and present project status reports to Senior Management.
Specific Accountabilities
- Strategic Leadership and Planning: Develops and implements construction strategies aligned with organizational goals. Leads long-term planning for project pipelines, resource allocation, and capital investments. Establishes frameworks for consistent project execution across the portfolio. Anticipates market trends and integrates them into strategic planning.
- Portfolio Management: Oversees multiple concurrent projects, ensuring alignment with company objectives. Prioritizes projects based on business needs, financial impact, and risk. Monitors key performance indicators (KPIs) across all projects to drive accountability. Optimizes resource utilization across the portfolio to maximize efficiency.
- Financial Oversight and Budget Management: Develops and manages annual budgets for construction operations and projects. Ensures financial discipline across projects, adhering to cost controls and profitability goals. Approves significant expenditures, forecasts, and financial models. Identifies opportunities for cost savings and value engineering.
- Risk Management and Governance: Establishes risk management protocols to mitigate potential project disruptions. Ensures compliance with legal, regulatory, and safety requirements. Develops governance frameworks to maintain consistency and transparency across projects. Oversees dispute resolution processes and contractual claims management.
- Operational Excellence: Drives the adoption of best practices, processes, and technologies in construction project delivery. Implements systems to monitor progress, quality, and performance metrics at all project levels. Reviews and approves high-impact project milestones and deliverables. Cultivates a culture of continuous improvement in operational processes.
- Stakeholder Engagement and Relationship Management: Builds and maintains relationships with senior executives, clients, and external partners. Represents the organization in negotiations with contractors, vendors, and regulatory bodies. Communicates complex project issues and strategies effectively to stakeholders. Ensures alignment of stakeholder expectations with project outcomes.
- Team Leadership and Development: Leads and inspires a team of project managers, engineers, and construction professionals. Develops talent management strategies, including recruitment, mentoring, and succession planning. Fosters a collaborative and high-performance culture within the construction team. Aligns team goals with organizational vision and values.
- Technology and Data Utilization: Champions the use of construction management tools and advanced technologies (e.g., BIM, ERP systems). Leverages data analytics to drive decision-making and optimize performance. Establishes reporting systems for real-time visibility into project progress and risks.
- Safety and Environmental Leadership: Sets organizational standards for health, safety, and environmental compliance. Monitors the implementation of safety programs across all projects. Drives initiatives to achieve sustainability and environmental stewardship goals. Ensures alignment with corporate social responsibility (CSR) objectives.
Qualifications
- Relevant post-secondary education, preferably in Business Administration or Engineering.
- Minimum 15 years’ experience in Project Management or Business Development, preferably in commercial and residential construction.
- Proven success leading and managing project teams across multiple locations.
- Project Management Professional (PMP) certification is desirable.
- Experience with Microsoft Project is required.
