Full-Time Lead Infrastructure Engineer

KoboToolbox has an immediate opening for a Lead Infrastructure Engineer for a full-time position (approx. 35-40 hours/week). Commitment: at least 1 year.

Team Member Responsibilities:

• Lead a small, growing team (1.5 FTEs).
• Provide direction and mentorship, potentially expand the team.
• Manage team schedules for 24/7 coverage and implement on-call rotation.
• Develop infrastructure performance metrics and thresholds (acceptable, marginal, unacceptable).
• Document anticipatory and reactive plans for service uptime.
• Proactively manage public instances for availability/performance, labor reduction, and cost control.
• Supervise hosting for smaller instances, maintaining/streamlining infrastructure-as-code.
• Consult with self-hosting clients on best practices and maintenance.
• Expert Linux skills: systems administration, Docker containerization, Kubernetes orchestration.
• Document configurations, processes, and recurring tasks.
• Collaborate with software development to ensure smooth deployments and production performance (e.g., schema migrations).
• Maintain/improve development infrastructure (CI pipelines, automated deployments).
• Act as focal point for external auditors (ISO 27001 compliance).
• Participate in regular team video check-ins.
• Communicate with the public via support staff or forums.

Requirements

• At least 3 years of infrastructure engineering, systems administration experience.
• Technical team lead experience with hands-on technical work.
• Understanding of web application technologies (networking, hardware, virtualization, OS, databases).
• Excellent English verbal and written communication (crucial for remote work).
• Debian-based Linux server administration.
• Terraform, Helm, Kubernetes, and Docker in production environments.
• Python/Bash scripting.
• AWS services (EC2, S3, EKS, RDS, DocumentDB, ElasticCache, Route53, SES) and Azure/Google Cloud familiarity.
• Interest in data collection (surveys), particularly humanitarian emergencies, and improving the platform.
• Eastern time zone availability.
• 30+ hours per week preferred.

Preferred Skills

• Cloud infrastructure security best practices.
• PostgreSQL, MongoDB, and Redis database administration.
• GitHub Actions/GitLab CI/CD.
• XLSForm, ODK XForm, OpenRosa familiarity.
• Non-profit or mission-driven experience.
• Web application development (Python/Django, React, Node.js).
