About the job A Migrations Engineer plays a vital role in helping customers smoothly migrate their forums and data to the Discourse platform. This role requires technical expertise (development), project management, and excellent communication.

Some days you'll write custom migration scripts, handle complex data structures, and ensure data integrity. Other days you may troubleshoot issues, collaborate with customers, or enhance internal tools and documentation.

Responsibilities

• Scoping and planning migration projects
• Writing and running import scripts using our robust migration framework
• Setting up migration environments on Linux servers using Docker and different DB systems
• Supporting customers via public forums and support inboxes
• Reproducing bugs for developers
• Handling day-to-day tasks managing customer sites (instantiating, restoring backups)

Requirements

• Strong technical aptitude in Ruby or similar languages, SQL (MySQL/Postgres), regular expressions, and remote Linux server work (Debian-based)
• Experience writing custom scripts, handling various data structures and formats
• Excellent customer service skills (responsiveness, follow-through, empathy)
• Excellent communication skills, conveying technical concepts clearly, and collaborating effectively
• Strong knowledge of Discourse, including the admin interface and troubleshooting logs
• Initiative and proactive identification of areas for improvement
• Attention to detail, following up on loose ends
• Ability to manage multiple projects concurrently and prioritize effectively
• Willingness to ask for help and learn from issues

• Discourse community contributions (pull requests, plugins, migrations)
• Experience with other forum platforms (IP Board, Drupal, vBulletin)
• Open-source project experience
