Full-Time Principal Database Engineer

Team: As a Senior or Principal Database Engineer on the Database Engineering team, you will own the architecture, tooling, maintenance, and performance optimization of production database systems built on Postgres technology. The team manages AWS RDS infrastructure supporting loans. You'll develop tools and processes to help software engineers build better data models and support data quality initiatives.

Responsibilities:

• Own database architecture, tooling, maintenance, and performance optimizations on Postgres.
• Develop tools and processes for software engineers to improve data models.
• Implement data governance initiatives (quality, privacy, retention).
• Utilize Postgres extensions and optimization techniques.
• Guide design discussions on Postgres scalability solutions.
• Work in high-security/high-compliance environments.
• Mentor and collaborate with Software Engineers on data modeling best practices.

Required Skills:

• 8+ years of experience as a Senior Database Engineer/DBA using Postgres, preferably with AWS RDS experience.
• Strong knowledge of data modeling techniques for RDMS.
• Experience optimizing SQL queries and improving data workflows.
• Knowledge of Postgres extensions and performance optimization techniques.
• Familiarity with Postgres scalability solutions.
• Knowledge of fundamental AWS building blocks (EC2, EBS, S3, RDS, IAM, VPC).
• Experience in high-security/high-compliance environments (e.g., finance, healthcare).
• Relevant technical skills (scripting, SQL, Unix command line tools).

Location and Schedule:

• Remote, San Mateo, Columbus, Austin
• Operating across all US time zones.
• Regular on-site collaboration (3 days/quarter at an Upstart office). Travel expenses covered.
