Full-Time Senior Data Scientist

Position Overview: We seek passionate Data Scientists to build Oportun's core intellectual property for credit risk assessment of underbanked consumers lacking traditional credit scores. You'll work with alternative data sources (transactional, mobile, utility, financial services). This includes building machine learning models for risk management, collection/loss mitigation, fraud detection, and targeted marketing.

Responsibilities:

• Develop data products and machine learning models for Risk, Fraud, Collections, and portfolio management
• Create monitoring tools for model performance
• Build a model deployment platform
• Develop end-to-end reusable data pipelines
• Lead initiatives from planning to stakeholder management
• Collaborate with Compliance, Bank Partners, and Model Risk Management teams on model governance (validations, monitoring)

Qualifications:

• Master's or PhD in a quantitative field (Statistics, Math, CS, Engineering, Economics, etc.) or Bachelor's with significant experience
• Proven track record of driving business results
• Hands-on experience with machine learning techniques (Gradient Boosting, Logistic Regression, Neural Networks)
• 3+ years of data extraction, cleaning, analysis, and reusable data pipeline development
• Proficiency in SQL, Spark SQL, and/or Hive
• 3+ years of experience with modern machine learning tools and Python
• Strong communication and stakeholder management skills
• Experience in a fast-paced agile environment
• Experience with AWS EMR, SageMaker, or other cloud platforms (preferred)
• Experience with HDFS, Hive, shell scripting, and other big data tools (preferred)
