Job Overview: Supports power system forecast development for California ISO and EIM, including renewable resources, distributed resources, uncertainty, and ancillary services.
Key Responsibilities:
- Analyzes Numerical Weather Prediction Models and translates forecasts to daily ISO/EIM needs.
- Provides input for data and neural network modeling improvements.
- Tracks and evaluates new variable energy resources.
- Acts as project coordinator for forecast accuracy design, analysis, and testing.
- Uses statistical methods to collect and organize load, weather, and renewable resource data.
- Gathers and interprets meteorological data to create short and medium-range forecasts for the Bulk Electric System.
- Validates and improves forecasts for load, wind, solar, distributed resources, and uncertainty.
- Provides meteorological insight and support to CAISO and WEIM.
- Identifies and alerts Operations to meteorological events impacting system reliability.
- Monitors, analyzes, and reports on forecasting results.
- Identifies root causes of forecast design gaps.
- Provides technical and analytical services to internal and external entities.
- Improves forecasting monitoring and reporting processes.
- Improves data collection and processing procedures.
- Creates and maintains databases of historical load, weather, renewable resources, and other pertinent data.
- Evaluates and recommends improvements to current procedures.
- Develops hypotheses to improve forecasting accuracy.
- Retrains neural network models to test forecast hypotheses.
- Researches, develops, and creates plans to enhance forecasting models (short-term load, wind, solar, uncertainty).
- Develops and implements new forecasting tools and interfaces.
- Provides analysis and coordination for variable energy resource onboarding.
- Assists with policy issues and related matters.
- Acts as project coordinator for forecast applications.
- Coordinates project efforts with ISO business units, vendors, and market participants.
Education & Experience:
- Bachelor's degree (BA, BS) or equivalent in Atmospheric Science/Meteorology, Statistics, Math, Computer Science, Economics, Data Science, Engineering, or a related field.
- Preferred: Master's or PhD degree.
- 2+ years of related experience in short/long-term forecasting, utilizing neural networks and model optimization techniques.
- Experience with Western US meteorology, numerical weather prediction models, uncertainty analysis, and communication.
- Experience with neural network, analytical, or optimization techniques (e.g., statistics, probability, economics).
- Experience with data management, databases (SQL, MS-Access, MS-Excel), and data warehousing.
- Experience applying statistics, advanced mathematics, simulation, software development, and data modeling.
- Desired: Knowledge of Balancing Authority operational requirements, EMS, SCADA, and PI Historian.
