AECOM seeks a highly motivated Senior Avian Field Biologist for immediate on-call, project-based employment in the Imperial and Riverside County region. This remote field position requires local presence at assignments for extended periods, linked to a Southern California office.
The position supports natural resource projects in the southern Mojave Desert focusing on burrowing owl biological surveys.
Candidate may be located in (or willing to relocate to) the Mojave Desert, based on assignment. Other tasks may include vegetation mapping, wildlife assessments, habitat restoration, and regulatory compliance/permitting.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Experience with listed species surveys (desert tortoise, flat-tailed horned lizard) in southern California and Nevada.
- Proven experience leading burrowing owl surveys.
Responsibilities may include:
- Leading wildlife/botanical surveys (vegetation/habitat mapping)
- Identifying/recording native/non-native fauna/flora
- Conducting special-status species surveys
- Avian species identification and mortality monitoring
- Project execution support (pre-construction/construction monitoring)
- Environmental compliance monitoring
- Botanical knowledge/phenology evaluation for native seed scouting
- Restoration crew oversight and native seed collection
- Monitoring restoration vegetation performance
- Data collection/management/analysis using electronic methods (GPS)
- Fieldwork as part of a team or individually (rugged terrain)
- Task management/budgeting/scheduling
- Elevating compliance concerns to senior management
- Communicating project requirements to compliance/construction teams
- Promoting safety culture/adherence to Safe Work Plans
Burrowing Owl Qualifications:
- Understanding of species ecology
- Independent habitat assessment & seasonal surveys
- Knowledge of state/federal statutes (research, conservation)
- Impact analysis of development on burrowing owls and habitat
Minimum Requirements:
- Bachelor's degree in a related field (biology, ecology)
- 4 years of relevant experience/equivalency in avian biology/fieldwork
- Valid driver's license
