Overview of the RoleWe are looking for a seasoned Senior Director of Design to spearhead product design at QuillBot. This role demands a strong leader—someone who can establish systems, set expectations, and provide the clarity designers need in a fast-paced, high-growth environment.

You will be responsible for advancing our design process alongside Product and Engineering, and for guiding performance management, hiring, and professional development for the design team.

You will manage a team of design managers and functional leads, collaborating across functions to support planning, execution, and team growth.

Ideal candidates bring experience with complex, multi-faceted B2C products, and have led large, distributed design teams across several pods.

Your ability to maintain cohesion and collaboration across various time zones and locations, coupled with an empathetic leadership style, is crucial. You must be adept at resolving friction, building strong partnerships, and fostering cross-functional chemistry for excellent results.

Responsibilities:

• Lead the product design function, overseeing a team of Design Managers and the Design System Lead.
• Develop, implement, and refine a high-functioning design process focused on collaboration, speed, and quality.
• Define and track key execution and design metrics to inform strategic decisions and demonstrate impact.
• Ensure design workflows are predictable, scalable, and integrated with our product operating model across all pods and workstreams.
• Foster strong cross-functional partnerships with Product, AI, and Engineering based on shared accountability and operational clarity.
• Proactively identify and resolve friction between functions, helping teams align quickly.
• Establish clear performance expectations, career paths, and growth frameworks for the product design team.
• Partner with product leadership on quarterly planning and cross-workstream prioritization.
• Collaborate with the Design System Lead to evolve and maintain a cohesive design system.
• Guide the design team in creating intuitive, inclusive, and user-centered experiences that drive business outcomes.
• Represent the design function at the leadership level, ensuring design is involved in strategic conversations.

Qualifications:

• 12+ years of product/UX design experience, with 7+ years in leadership roles.
• Proven ability to effectively manage both individual contributors (ICs) and managers.
• Experience leading product design for complex software products.
• Experience in B2C environments, ideally within fast-moving, high-growth companies.
• Extensive experience in building and evolving strong Agile UX design operations, systems, and performance frameworks at scale.
• Success in scaling and managing multi-pod design teams, including remote and distributed team structures.
• Proven ability to drive cross-functional alignment and navigate complex team dynamics with empathy and decisiveness.
• Strong proficiency with Figma and common Design System frameworks (e.g., Storybook, MUI).
• Strong plus: Experience designing for global user bases or non-English markets.
• Strong plus: Experience designing for desktop/mobile applications or browser extensions.
• Strong plus: Experience designing AI-powered user experiences or systems.
• Strong plus: Experience with clickstream analytics tools (e.g., Amplitude, GA4).
