Full-Time Computational Journalist

ProPublica is seeking a computational journalist to uncover abuses of power and betrayals of public trust. We seek someone who uses technology and data to identify and unlock stories. This may involve testing Wi-Fi networks, fingerprinting propaganda, or analyzing child protective services data.

You'll be part of ProPublica's data team, collaborating with talented journalists.

Responsibilities Include:

• Finding and building data to uncover stories.
• Conducting analyses to detect bias and harms.
• Writing engaging methodologies to explain and reproduce our work.
• Developing investigative projects using code, data analysis, interviews, research, and reporting.
• Cleaning, validating, and checking data.
• Scraping websites and handling unstructured data.
• Consuming APIs, including poorly designed ones.

Skills & Experience:

• Minimum 4+ years of data project experience, ideally focused on accountability in a newsroom.
• Ability to bring an accountability lens to daily issues via short (couple of weeks) and long (months+) investigations, using data and code.
• Experience building data pipelines and performing rigorous analysis.
• Understanding of data analysis tools (databases, statistical software like R, Google BigQuery, Python/pandas, Jupyter Notebooks).
• Experience with data journalism best practices (detail, documentation, reproducibility).
• Familiarity with AI/machine learning (generative AI, large language models).
• Knowledge of public data sources and experience with data requests.
• Strong organizational and focus skills.
• Excellent communication skills to translate complex topics clearly.
• Ability to work independently and collaboratively with teammates and local reporters.
• Willingness to travel for assignments.
• Passion for accountability stories and uncovering the truth.
