WHAT TO EXPECT AS A WALDEN FACULTY MEMBER Faculty members educate Walden University students using online technology and resources for thoughtful, timely, and well-written communication of knowledge, information, feedback, and critique. They grade assignments, participate in discussions, respond to student emails, and use technology to enhance the learning experience. This is done with respect to students, faculty, Walden University, and the relevant discipline.
TRAINING All new faculty members receive training in online teaching techniques, learning platform use, school/college policies, and Walden University culture. Assessment of academic integrity and research supervision are also covered. Teaching and mentorship assignments are contingent on successful training completion. Faculty may have a peer mentor during their first term.
COURSE/ TEACHING AVAILABILITY Courses are taught via Blackboard, with 24/7 discussion board access. Faculty are expected to be online a minimum of 4 days per week, with responses to student questions within 48 hours. Online office hours or regular online chats are suggested.
TOOLS/ TECHNICAL SKILLS Essential duties and performance of each function are evaluated. Reasonable accommodations are available for those with disabilities.
LICENSING/ CERTIFICATION Faculty must be credentialed, currently working as an FNP, possess an earned degree from an accredited institution, and may require licensure for specific programs. Maintenance of licenses and certifications is required. Currency in research is expected through review of articles, journals, and presentations.
EDUCATION and EXPERIENCE Earned Doctorate, professional scholarly contributions, at least one year of higher education teaching experience, current clinical experience in NP practice. Online teaching experience is preferred. Commitment to student learning and development in distance learning is required. Excellent oral and written communication, leadership, team, collaboration and interpersonal skills are essential.
TRAVEL Contributing faculty may travel to university events and residencies.
WORK ENVIRONMENT Primarily office environment with moderate noise. Personal computer operation, physical demands associated with a traditional office setting.
TECHNOLOGY REQUIREMENTS Personal computer with virus protection and internet access is required. Walden University provides email, learning platform access, faculty website sections, and communications tools.
SOFTWARE REQUIREMENTS Current web browser (Internet Explorer ver. 9.0 or higher or Firefox ver. 19 or higher); Microsoft Office suite; Adobe Reader; Adobe Flash Player; Apple QuickTime; Windows Media Player; antivirus software. Software versions may change.
COMPENSATION Graduate course instruction: $1,560 - $4,080 per quarter/semester; Undergraduate course instruction: $700 - $2,200 per quarter. Pay is adjusted based on factors like course type, experience, location, licensure, market factors, and departmental budgets. Other opportunities include dissertation/doctoral study committee chair, research reviewing, and mentorship.
