The Quantitative Biometrician Forester applies statistical and mathematical models to analyze forest carbon data and evaluate emissions from sustainable forest management practices.
Responsibilities:
- Evaluate and implement forest growth & yield models (FVS)
- Assist with validations and verifications of forest carbon projects
- Assess, develop, implement, and analyze timber cruises
- Provide assistance and training in applied biometrics, forest modeling, and statistics
- Quantify attributes from forest inventory data related to carbon
- Establish biomass and carbon stocking levels
- Evaluate forest management and planting/reforestation plans
- Determine optimal silvicultural prescriptions
- Monitor contract compliance and results of forest management activities
- Determine optimal timber harvesting methods
- Assess deforested lands for proper reclamation
- Assess projects for conservation of wildlife habitats and soil and water quality
- Evaluate forest attributes, geospatial analysis, and field maps
- Support management with special projects
Education and Experience:
Required: Bachelor’s degree in Forestry or statistics with coursework in forest biometrics, sampling design, and/or statistics, plus two years of experience in forest biomass or carbon inventories.
Preferred: Master’s degree in statistics or forest biometrics (analytical/biometric/geospatial focus preferred) with coursework in forest biometrics, sampling design, and/or statistics.
Skills:
- Knowledge of forest biometrics, statistics, growth and yield models (FVS, FORSEE and similar), and data management
- Knowledge of forest inventory applications
- Demonstrated knowledge using remote sensing technologies (ArcMap or other web-based GIS applications)
- Quality mensuration services
- Computer Skills: Microsoft Windows, Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Access
Travel: Frequent travel required (34%-66%)
