Reporting to the News Editor, the Senior Crime & Courts Reporter will have in-depth knowledge of US crime and the judiciary, and its intersection with politics, policy, and culture.
Responsibilities include:
- Sourcing, pitching, researching, and developing original content for several stories daily.
- Reaching Newsweek's broad U.S. readership with engaging stories that reflect American concerns and interests.
- Connecting crime and court cases to broader national socioeconomic and political issues.
- Adhering to ethical and journalistic best practices.
- Demonstrating detailed knowledge of US criminal law, the justice system, law enforcement, crime trends, major cases, and policies.
- Producing content that leads the daily news agenda, including breaking news, live blogs, interviews, and exclusives.
- Monitoring multiple sources for news and current affairs topics.
- Ensuring high-quality coverage that is accurate and fair.
Topics covered may include:
- Supreme Court decisions and their impact
- Major criminal trials and court proceedings
- Crime statistics and trends
- Violent crimes, missing persons, and cold cases
- Gun violence, drug crime, and the opioid epidemic
- White-collar crime, cybercrime, and police misconduct
- Criminal justice reform, gang-related crime, and human trafficking
- Police-community relations and prison conditions
Qualifications include:
- Several years of newsroom experience at a reputable publication
- Strong organization and planning skills
- Excellent writing and copy-editing skills
- Knowledge of SEO and online journalism
- Familiarity with US crime and courts news
- Ability to use social media, Google Trends, and other news discovery tools
- Strong work ethic and ability to work under pressure
Working hours: Monday to Friday, 6am-6pm.Location: London, UK with remote work option.Key Responsibilities: Contribute to multiple daily news stories, obtain original comments, research and examine legal documents, analyze data, contribute to live blogs, and produce graphics.
