The Senior Database Administrator is responsible for maintaining hardware platforms, associated operating systems, and connectivity capabilities within NM's IT environment. This includes monitoring, analyzing, and planning upgrades to ensure capacity and availability meet user needs.
Responsibilities:
Technical Skills
- Leads RDBMS architecture implementation for high availability, disaster recovery, and test systems using industry best practices.
- Maintains databases for space management and object optimization to ensure performance and data integrity.
- Conducts regular database, file structure, and security reviews to ensure compliance and identify areas for improvement, reporting findings and recommendations to the Database Manager and leadership.
- Completes management-approved documentation for tests, implementations, upgrades, and conversions, including schedules and backout/recovery plans.
- Monitors databases (space utilization), performs backups/restores, reorganizations, re-indexing, and compiles as directed.
- Monitors and performs performance maintenance tasks, data integrity checks, performance tuning, and backups/recovery to minimize unplanned database and system downtime.
Communication and Collaboration
- Exhibits strong oral and written communication skills to communicate with team members, IS professionals, management, users, and vendors to ensure successful task completion.
- Communicates with customers regarding incident tickets, system evaluations, task/project priorities, and alternative service requests that don't meet standards.
- Communicates project implementation statuses and problem resolutions to IS staff, management, and users.
- Communicates problems and resolution statuses to vendors in a timely and professional manner.
- Documents policies, procedures, standards, and methodologies for database maintenance.
Planning and Strategic Thinking
- Demonstrates strong task and project management skills to ensure timely task and project completion.
- Assists the Database Manager in developing logical project plans with task timeframes and resource estimates.
- Develops and maintains proficient use of project management software.
- Understands and adheres to system implementation and problem resolution priorities set by the DBA Team and IS management.
- Assists in identifying, evaluating, and recommending new application/database products and tools.
- Actively participates in project teams, evidenced by project minutes, status reports, and outcomes.
Support Responsibilities
- Resolves problems effectively to minimize disruptions and unplanned downtimes of assigned systems and databases.
- Analyzes issues, diagnoses problems, and determines resolutions, working with other DBAs, Infrastructure, and Application teams as needed.
- Escalates problems to the Team Leader, other IS staff, on-call management, and vendors as necessary.
- Documents problem-solving measures to facilitate efficient resolution of recurring problems.
- Provides on-call coverage for database systems 24x7x365 on a rotating basis.
- Assists in Business/Disaster Recovery planning and preparedness efforts.
