About Friends

We are Friends From The City, a design and tech company focused on impact. Our mission is to make digital interactions with the government easy, inclusive, and accessible for everyone. We create user-centered, inclusive, and accessible digital experiences for federal agencies. Picture this: A loved one is trying to access information on a government website, but they experience frustrating navigational challenges. Perhaps a relative seeking citizenship needs help understanding the application process because of a language barrier. At Friends, we work to eliminate obstacles like these.

We envision a future where everyone has equal access to the benefits of technology and where the use of technology is guided by ethical principles, plain language, a commitment to sustainability, inclusivity, and accessibility. We’re a minority, woman-owned, LGBT+., and service-disabled veteran-owned small business. That being said, diversity and inclusion aren’t trendy bylines for us. Everyone we hire is celebrated for their unique background, experience, and talent.

Our approach to human-centered design and software development is pretty straightforward. Guided by user research, we design and develop functional platforms using clean code and intuitive design, and then we make those platforms accessible to everyone.

About the Role

As a Sr. Content Writer, you’ll be at the heart of creating clear, concise, and engaging content that connects with all Veterans. You’ll work with UX researchers, designers, and product managers to ensure every message is user-centered and easy to understand, no matter how complex the information.

Our ideal candidate thrives in a fast-paced environment, builds strong relationships with product teams, and champions plain language principles. This role is your chance to make a difference—helping Veterans access and understand the services they're entitled to while directly improving the lives of those who’ve served our country.

Responsibilities

  • Write and edit plain language content for VA.gov web pages, explaining complex government services
  • Collaborate closely with designers, product managers, and subject matter experts across the VA to ensure adherence to plain language principles
  • Coach and persuade VA product teams on the value of clear, user-focused content
  • Manage and prioritize work across multiple product teams autonomously
  • Create accurate and accessible content
  • Audit content and work within intricate information architecture frameworks
  • Support content migration efforts and contribute to content governance processes

Requirements

  • 5+ years of professional content or UX writing experience
  • A strong portfolio featuring diverse writing samples that highlight the use of plain language in web applications, forms, or mobile apps
  • Excellent research skills and the ability to distill complex information into clear, engaging content
  • Strong attention to detail and the ability to adhere to content style guides
  • Understanding of UX writing principles, with a focus on accessibility and inclusive communication practices
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively in a fast-paced remote environment
  • Strong organizational skills with the ability to manage multiple projects and meet deadlines
  • A degree in English, Communications, Journalism, or a related field

  • Experience writing for government or nonprofit organizations
  • Experience with content management systems like Drupal, including content migration expertise
