PeerJ is an open-access publisher specializing in peer-reviewed research across life sciences, environmental sciences, medicine, and chemistry. Known for its innovative publishing model, PeerJ emphasizes rigorous peer review and broad accessibility of scientific knowledge.
Role Overview: This role works closely with internal teams and external Academic Editors and peer-reviewers.
Responsibilities:
- Evaluate incoming manuscripts for adherence to policies, aims, scope, and editorial standards.
- Liaise with authors regarding manuscript adherence.
- Support and cover for other staff editors.
- Provide input and advice on scientific/technical issues related to subject expertise and editorial standards.
- Respond to relevant emails in shared inboxes.
- Collaborate on maintaining the integrity, speed, and smooth running of the peer-review process.
- Provide input on changes to Scope, Editorial Policies, and Author Instructions.
- Train new staff members.
- Proactively develop journal program, such as proposing/creating new sections.
- Input into recruitment, vetting, and communication with Editorial Board members.
- Conduct ethical investigations as needed.
- Collaborate with colleagues on user needs and developing strategies.
- Suggest and implement process improvements to enhance peer-review KPIs.
- Work closely with the Communities Team and Publishing Operations team.
Qualifications:
- Advanced degree (minimum PhD, ideally postdoctoral)
- STM background preferred
- Strong English communication skills (written & verbal)
- Analytical, decision-making, and problem-solving skills
- Ability to work independently and contribute to team spirit
- 4+ years experience in editorial roles
- Understanding of complex scientific topics; ability to communicate with academics
- Professional and articulate
- Handling multiple responsibilities and meeting deadlines
- Ability to communicate upstream and downstream within the organization
- Positive and flexible attitude; willingness to travel
- High level of personal motivation and persistence
- Strong presentation and organizational skills
