Full-Time Substation Physical Engineer III

Timmons Group is seeking a Substation Physical Engineer III to join our Electrical Design Group in Charlotte, NC.

Responsibilities include developing substation project designs, studies, and technical documents. The role involves leading project teams and providing supervision for design and layout drawings (general arrangement plans, conduit, cabling, fencing, grounding, control building layouts, wiring diagrams, schematics). The candidate will also prepare specifications for procurement and construction.

Essential Duties:

• Develop scopes of work, conceptual designs, and execution plans.
• Prepare engineering cost and man-hour estimates and schedules.
• Perform physical substation design (yard layouts, plans, details, grounding plans, lightning protection, control buildings, raceway systems).
• Develop complete bills of material.
• Arrange substation structure elements and associated equipment/foundations.
• Develop detail drawings (section views, equipment/bus work installation).
• Design ground grid plans and grounding details.
• Conduct system sizing studies and prepare calculations for various studies (grounding, lighting protection, insulation coordination).
• Prepare equipment specifications and participate in factory acceptance testing.
• Coordinate design activities with other departments (civil/structural, networks, transmission line).
• Provide guidance to less experienced team members.
• Regularly communicate with clients and outside personnel.
• Provide short-term field support during construction.

Skills/Requirements:

• Bachelor's degree in Engineering.
• Minimum 7 years related experience (Master's degree may substitute for 1 year).
• Professional Engineer (PE) preferred.
• Proficiency with National Electrical Safety Code and IEEE/ANSI Standards.
• Knowledge of AutoCAD preferred.
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
• Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
