Timmons Group is seeking a Substation Physical Engineer III to join our Electrical Design Group in Charlotte, NC.
Responsibilities include preparing substation project design, studies, and technical documents. The candidate will lead the project design team and provide supervision for the design and layout drawing production, including general arrangement plans, conduit, cabling, fencing, grounding, control building layouts, wiring diagrams, schematics, and specifications for procurement and construction. Essential duties include developing scopes of work, conceptual designs, and execution plans; preparing engineering cost and man-hour estimates and schedules; performing physical substation design (yard layouts, plans, details, grounding plans, lightning protection, control buildings, exterior raceway systems); developing complete bills of material; arranging substation structure elements; developing section views and detail drawings; creating ground grid design plans and equipment/structure grounding details; performing system sizing studies; preparing calculations for studies (grounding, lighting protection, insulation coordination studies); preparing equipment specifications for procurement and participating in factory acceptance testing; coordinating design activities with other departments (Civil/Structural, Networks, Transmission Line); providing guidance and mentoring; meeting and corresponding with clients; providing short-term field support during construction.
Skills/Requirements:
- Bachelor's degree in Engineering from accredited program
- Minimum 7 years related experience (Master's degree in related field may substitute for one year of experience)
- Professional Engineer (PE) preferred
- Proficiency with National Electrical Safety Code and IEEE/ANSI Standards
- Knowledge of computer drafting tools (AutoCAD preferred)
- Excellent written & verbal communication skills
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills
