AECOM has an exciting opportunity for a Senior Structural Engineer to support our growing Energy Practice's Grid Modernization Initiative. This role offers the flexibility to work remotely and/or be located at various Energy offices across the United States through AECOM's Freedom to Grow program. The program enables flexibility in work schedules and locations, maximizing employee wellbeing and sustainability while delivering exceptional client solutions.
Our team provides a wide range of civil and structural engineering services across various markets. This includes electrical transmission and distribution (OH/UG power systems, substations, EV charging networks, microgrid design), renewables (Solar PV, Battery Energy Storage Systems, Wind), industrial process (Oil & Gas, petrochemical), and building decarbonization/next-generation energy (hydrogen, fuel cells, electrolyzers). We seek a motivated individual to enhance our technical capabilities and serve our clients.
Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
- Acting as the structural lead and engineer of record for substation, switchyard, and electrical infrastructure projects (both green and brownfield).
- Performing engineering calculations and developing analytical models for structural steel and concrete design.
- Collaborating with Project Engineers and Project Managers on workload forecasts, design schedules, and budgets.
- Supporting proposal development with task and effort estimations.
- Contributing to business development strategy for substation and high-voltage electrical infrastructure.
- Directing civil/structural design team to ensure engineering drawing completion.
- Participating in multi-discipline collaboration on general arrangements, vendor procurement packages, and similar tasks.
- Creating, updating, and implementing group-specific standards.
- Preparing technical reports and presentations.
- Preparing project technical specifications and contract documents.
- Checking and verifying peer/group work.
- Mentoring civil/structural engineers and contributing to department standards.
- Occasional travel to other AECOM locations and client sites.
Minimum Requirements:
- Bachelor's degree in Civil or Structural Engineering
- +6 years of relevant experience in transmission, distribution, and substation projects
Preferred Qualifications:
- Professional engineering licensure
- +10 years of experience, with at least 3 years as structural engineering lead/engineer of record
- Comprehensive industry codes and standards (e.g., NESC, G.O.95, ASCE 113, ASCE 10, ASCE 48, IEEE 605, IEEE 693, AISC 360, ASCE 7, IBC, ACI 318, RUS, ASCE design guidelines, NEC)
- Experience in complex, multi-discipline programs/projects and CAD teams
- 3D modeling, analysis, and design of steel structures and foundations experience
- Structural design experience for overhead and underground transmission and distribution systems
- Experience with various voltage levels (4kV, 12kV, 138kV, 230kV, 500kV, etc.)
- Proficiency in PLS-CADD packages (PLS-Tower, PLS-Pole, etc.)
- Experience with structural analysis and design software (e.g., Staad.PRO, SAP2000, MFAD, L-Pile)
- Experience working with remote teams
- Experience on full EPC, Design/Build projects from start to finish
- Owner's Engineering experience
- Experience with retrofit or brownfield projects
- Experience with California Electric Utilities
