AECOM has a position available for a Structural Engineer to support our growing Energy Practice’s Grid Modernization Initiative. We offer the freedom and flexibility to work remotely and/or be located at various Energy offices across the US through our Freedom to Grow program.
Our team provides civil and structural engineering services across sectors including electrical transmission & distribution (OH/UG power systems, substations, EV charging networks, microgrid design), renewables (Solar PV, Battery Energy Storage Systems, Wind), industrial process (Oil & Gas, petrochemical), building decarbonization and next generation energy (hydrogen, fuel cells, electrolyzers, etc.).
We seek an enthusiastic individual to develop and further technical skills for our clients.
Responsibilities include:
- Leading/supporting engineering and design for substations, switchyards, and other electrical infrastructure projects (green and brown field).
- Performing engineering calculations and developing analytical models for structural steel and concrete design.
- Working with Project Engineers and Managers on developing workload forecasts, design schedules and budgets for civil/structural work.
- Assisting with developing task and effort estimates for proposal support.
- Contributing to overall business development strategy around substations and high-voltage electrical infrastructure.
- Coordinating with civil/structural design team to direct completion of engineering drawings.
- Multi-discipline collaboration on general arrangements, vendor procurement packages, etc.
- Creating, updating, and implementing group specific standards.
- Preparing technical reports and presentations.
- Preparing project technical specifications and contract documents.
- Checking and verifying peer/group work.
- Occasional travel to other AECOM locations and client sites.
Minimum Requirements:
- Bachelor’s degree in Civil or Structural Engineering from ABET-accredited college or university.
- 4 years of relevant experience in transmission, distribution and substation projects.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Professional engineering license or EIT.
- 6+ years of experience preferred.
- Comprehensive industry codes and standards (e.g. NESC, G.O.95, ASCE 113, ASCE 10, ASCE 48, IEEE 605, IEEE 693, AISC 360, ASCE 7, IBC, ACI 318, RUS, ASCE design guidelines, NEC).
- Demonstrated experience in participating complex, multi-discipline programs/projects and CAD teams.
- Experience executing work in 3D model environments.
- Experience in the modeling, analysis and design of steel structures and foundations.
- Experience with structural design for overhead and underground transmission and distribution systems.
- Experience with various voltage levels (4kV, 12kV, 138kV, 230kV, 500kV, etc.).
- Proficiency in PLS-CADD packages (PLS-Tower, PLS-Pole, PLS-Tower, etc.).
- Experience with structural analysis and design software (e.g. Staad.PRO, SAP2000, MFAD, L-Pile).
- Experience working with remote teams.
- Experience on full EPC, Design/Build projects from start to finish.
- Owner’s Engineering experience.
- Experience with retrofit or brown field projects.
- Experience with California Electric Utilities.
- Experience working on thermal power plant or heavy industrial projects.
