We are seeking a dynamic and dedicated Commissioning Editor to join our award-winning books programme.
You will be a core member of our books publishing team, responsible for managing and developing a defined portfolio in the field of politics, policy, and public administration.
You will commission new titles, manage editor and author relationships, oversee the timely delivery of manuscripts, and create and deliver a strategic plan for your list.
This is a great opportunity to play a key role in the development of an impactful books programme, publishing works aligned with the United Nations SDGs and Emerald's real-world content strategy.
Location: We are a remote-first company, but we believe in face-to-face collaboration. UK colleagues meet monthly and quarterly for team time/company gatherings. Please be within a commutable distance for these.
Responsibilities:
- Sign an annually agreed number of titles (monographs, edited collections, short-form projects).
- Work with internal and external stakeholders (authors, reviewers, editorial/production, rights/ethics).
- Develop close author/editor relationships, expanding your external network.
- Contribute to portfolio targets (product mix, subject coverage, author/editor satisfaction).
- Handover agreed titles per annum.
- Promote key signings, news, and collaborations.
- Monitor the end-to-end process (commissioning to publication), communicating slippage.
- Deliver a strategic commissioning plan (aligned with SDGs/Emerald Goals).
- Manage publishing outputs to targets/KPIs.
- Explore opportunities for new content (podcasts, blogs, case studies).
Requirements:
- Strong written and interpersonal skills
- Effective stakeholder management/communication
- Excellent organizational skills
- Knowledge of publishing ethics
- Strong analytical skills
- Negotiation and commissioning skills
- Understanding of academic publishing
- Familiarity with relevant systems (Emerald Insight, Power BI, etc.)
