Full-Time Principal Data Engineer

NBC News Digital is building the digital future for a leading news organization. The Digital Technology team is improving digital products (web, mobile, OTT, CMS, curation systems) and a platform for distributing content to millions.

As a Principal Data Engineer, you will lead the technical direction of data infrastructure. Working with machine learning, data science, and DevOps teams, you'll architect and deliver innovative solutions to drive business value.

Responsibilities:

1. Lead data architecture & strategy, designing scalable data pipelines that support NBC News’ digital platforms.
2. Build & maintain advanced analytics pipelines, data applications, and business intelligence solutions to support critical decision-making.
3. Collaborate with data scientists, machine learning engineers, DevOps, and business stakeholders.
4. Mentor and guide the data engineering team, fostering technical excellence.
5. Ensure data systems comply with security, governance, and quality standards.
6. Develop frameworks for data validation, testing, and monitoring.
7. Identify data pipeline challenges and implement efficient, scalable solutions.
8. Ensure data systems scale with growing data volumes, optimizing performance and cost efficiency in cloud platforms (AWS).
9. Collaborate with product teams, senior leaders, and technical teams to identify data-driven opportunities to improve business operations and user experiences.

Requirements:

• 7+ years experience in data engineering or related technical roles.
• Expertise in modern cloud computing platforms (AWS) and distributed data technologies (Apache Spark, Hadoop).
• Proficiency in programming languages (Python, PySpark, JavaScript).
• Deep understanding of data architecture, governance, and schema-less big data storage.
• Experience designing, developing, and maintaining large-scale data pipelines (streaming data using Spark and Kafka).
• Hands-on experience with serverless computing platforms (AWS Lambda, S3).
• Proficiency with SQL, Presto, and related data querying technologies.
• Proven leadership and mentoring abilities.
• Interest in technology, data, and media.
• B.S. or M.S. in Computer Science or equivalent.

Bonus Points:

• Experience with workflow orchestration tools (Apache Airflow, DAGs).
• Experience in real-time data streaming (Spark Streaming, Kafka).
• Familiarity with data science and machine learning pipelines.
• Experience with big data technologies (Hive, Presto, Redshift).

Fully Remote Position.

Salary range: $185,000-$215,000
