About the Role
The Senior Manager of Communications is a key storyteller and editorial strategist, responsible for producing compelling, accessible, and inclusive content that advances NBDF’s mission across audiences and platforms. This individual will lead content development, editorial planning, and cross-channel messaging efforts while managing a small creative team. Reporting to the Vice President of Marketing & Communications, the Senior Manager of Communications will collaborate closely with internal departments, chapters, and partners to ensure NBDF’s voice remains clear, consistent, and mission-aligned. This role is ideal for a mission-driven communicator who thrives at the intersection of healthcare, advocacy, and storytelling.
Key Responsibilities
- Content Development & Editorial Strategy: Write and edit a range of content, including press releases, website copy, patient stories, donor and provider communications, program updates, and safety alerts.
- Lead editorial planning and messaging frameworks for key initiatives such as youth engagement, advocacy alerts, and research campaigns.
- Act as managing editor for flagship publications, ensuring content is inclusive, accessible, and aligned with NBDF’s brand voice.
- Develop editorial guidelines, templates, and toolkits to support staff and chapter communications.
- Supervise direct reports, regularly monitoring progress and providing editorial guidance that aligns with organizational priorities.
- Strategic Communications Support: Assist in the development, execution, and evaluation of NBDF’s public relations and communications strategies to enhance brand awareness and align with organizational goals.
- Coordinate communications plans for NBDF’s programs, services, and national events, ensuring clear, compelling, audience-centered messaging.
- Support rapid response and safety-related communications in collaboration with internal teams and partner agencies.
- Manage editorial calendars, coordinate cross-departmental content intake, and help track deliverables and timelines, ensuring messaging consistency across PR, web, email, and social platforms.
- Coordinate with external vendors and partners to support translation of key materials into Spanish and other languages, ensuring accessibility and inclusivity.
- Media Relations & Storytelling: Support the identification and packaging of stories and subject matter experts for media, donor, and advocacy purposes while analyzing impact and drafting organizational responses.
- Draft talking points, op-eds, quotes, and scripts for spokespeople and senior leaders.
- Edit and assemble press releases, media alerts, and kits; help maintain a story and media asset library.
- Coordinate with NBDF’s chapter network to unify messaging, share best practices, and elevate key stories.
- Help build and maintain relationships with media outlets and support timely dissemination of NBDF news and updates.
What You Bring:
- Bachelor’s degree or equivalent years of experience.
- Minimum 7 years of experience in nonprofit communications, journalism, or content strategy, ideally in health, advocacy, or patient-centered fields.
- Outstanding writing, editing, and storytelling skills across print and digital platforms.
- Expertise in translating scientific or technical language into accessible and engaging content.
- Familiarity with inclusive and culturally competent communication practices.
- Strong project and editorial management skills with the ability to manage content calendars, production workflows, and deadlines.
- Proficiency in CMS platforms (Drupal required; WordPress a plus), email marketing tools (Mailchimp), media monitoring (e.g., Meltwater or Cision), project management systems (Monday.com, Hive), and creative platforms (Canva).
- Spanish fluency or experience with multilingual content a plus.
