About the Ethereum Foundation The Ethereum Foundation (EF) is a global non-profit organization supporting Ethereum and related technologies. Our mission is to support Ethereum's long-term success. We allocate resources to critical projects, represent Ethereum within the ecosystem, and advocate for it externally. Background Protocol is the EF's R&D group, aiming to bring the world computer to the world. Our research, engineering, and delivery teams work at the frontier of multiple domains to achieve Ethereum's ambitious roadmap.
About this Role The UX Lead will collaborate with the Protocol Architecture team to ensure Ethereum benefits users. This is not a traditional product design role; it focuses on user research, strategic UX thinking, and shaping protocol-layer decisions before UI implementation. This role is foundational, defining and advocating for exceptional user experiences and infusing user-centric thinking into technical decisions.
Responsibilities
- Establish and embed UX best practices within Protocol, prioritizing user experience in technical design and strategic decisions.
- Conduct deep user research to identify pain points, opportunities, and interaction patterns across the Ethereum ecosystem.
- Consult and collaborate with technical teams within Protocol and the broader Ethereum ecosystem, enhancing their understanding and execution of user-centered design.
- Drive user-focused conversations, clearly articulate trade-offs, and shape decisions impacting the global Ethereum community.
Requirements
- 5+ years UX design experience, ideally with significant experience in deeply technical domains, including Ethereum or crypto products (wallets, apps, infrastructure, protocols).
- Proven ability to conduct rigorous user research, distill insights, and integrate them into product development.
- Strong collaboration and communication skills; experience advocating for UX best practices among highly technical teams.
Open Questions and Initiatives
- Identifying urgent user pain points and effective solutions.
- Designing, deploying, and leveraging interoperability features and standards for seamless cross-chain experiences.
- Communicating trust assumptions clearly and actionably without oversimplifying complexity.
- Exploring whether "Trust Experience" is the right approach for Ethereum's unique features.
- Exposing privacy as a core UX component for on-chain interactions.
- Addressing the transition from browser-extension wallets to embedded/in-app wallets.
How We Work
- Ethereum-First Focus: The EF prioritizes Ethereum's best interests, enabling unconventional strategies and bold approaches.
- Public by Default: Contributions are public, requiring proactive engagement, clear communication, and collaborative consensus-building.
- Agency, Impact, and Accountability: Significant freedom to define approaches, experiment, and take ownership of decisions, with clear accountability for strategic impact and broader ecosystem effects.
Contract Details
- Full-time, fully remote role with flexible hours.
- Availability around "Eth o'clock" (14:00 UTC) for synchronous calls.
- Potential travel a few times a year for events like Devcon or Interop.
- Anonymity permitted but with KYC requirement.
