Position Summary: As the Laboratory and Medical Director, the employee provides effective clinical leadership for laboratory services and products. Clinical oversight includes all laboratory operations (patient care, clinical trials, clinical research) ensuring compliance with regulations.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
- Acts as temporary Laboratory Director in absence.
- Delegates responsibilities to qualified employees (Technical Supervisor, General Supervisor, Clinical Consultant, Testing Personnel).
- Ensures proper performance of all Clinical Laboratory duties.
- Provides onsite, telephone, or electronic consultation as needed.
- Ensures quality laboratory services in pre-analytic, analytic, and post-analytic phases.
- Maintains appropriate physical and environmental conditions, a safe environment protecting employees from hazards.
- Selects test methodologies for required quality results.
- Confirms verification procedures for accuracy and precision.
- Ensures laboratory personnel perform methods for accurate results.
- Participates in accuracy assessment (proficiency testing) programs, ensuring results are returned on time, reports are reviewed, and corrective actions are taken.
- Establishes and maintains quality control and quality assessment programs.
- Maintains acceptable analytical performance for each test system.
- Takes remedial actions for deviations from performance characteristics and reports patient results only when systems are functioning properly.
- Ensures reports include pertinent interpretation information.
- Provides consultation to clients on test results and interpretation.
- Ensures a General Supervisor supervises high-complexity testing.
- Ensures sufficient laboratory personnel with appropriate education and experience/training.
- Ensures pre-testing personnel have appropriate education, experience, and training.
- Establishes and maintains policies and procedures for monitoring testing phases.
- Provides remedial training as needed to improve skills.
- Maintains an approved procedure manual for all personnel.
- Specifies responsibilities and duties of consultants, supervisors, and testing personnel.
- Conducts biennial review of Standard Operating Procedures.
- Reports concerns of test quality and/or safety.
Education/Licensure Requirements:
- MD or DO licensed in California
- Board certified in Anatomic or Clinical Pathology or equivalent
- 1+ year of laboratory training during medical residency
- 2+ years of directing/supervising high-complexity testing
- Doctoral degree in chemical, physical, biological, or clinical laboratory science
- Certification by a board approved by HHS
- Prior role as a laboratory director for high complexity testing
Additional Requirements:
- Meets requirements of 42 CFR 493.1443
- Meets College of American Pathologists Checklist
Work Environment:
- Variable hours and days.
- Standing/sitting for long periods.
- Exposure to hazardous materials, blood specimens, instruments with moving parts, heating/freezing, high-speed centrifugation.
Salary: $235,600 - $318,100 (USD). Does not include benefits.
Work Model: Hybrid, combining in-person and remote work. U.S. employees within 50 miles of a facility are required onsite on Mondays, Tuesdays, and Thursdays.
Other Details: Employee may be required to lift office supplies and use office equipment. Primarily desk/office environment with possible exposure to high noise levels, fumes, and biohazards.
