THE POSITION: The Senior Medical Science Liaison will be responsible for establishing, developing, and maintaining relationships with key stakeholders within a defined territory. The Senior MSL will be the scientific face of the Client in the field. The Senior MSL role requires mastery of technical, clinical, and functional expertise. A Senior MSL will be able to maximize and leverage Key Opinion Leader (KOL) relationships by identifying collaborative opportunities that meet the strategic needs of the company.
Key expectations:
- Develop and maintain an excellent scientific and medical knowledge base.
- Communicate key insights learned and disseminate critical scientific data to external stakeholders (academic/scientific/clinical experts, payers, and patient organizations).
- Ensure timely and appropriate input on field medical engagement plans in support of clinical development and commercialization programs.
- Assist and drive the support of company clinical trials.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Build and maintain deep expert relationships with KOLs; establish and maintain strong scientific connections across multi-specialty disciplines.
- Support and advise in translating the field medical strategy to a national KOL plan and ensuring the KOL development strategies translate to individual territories.
- Provide expert scientific support to KOLs and referring centers.
- Partner with Medical Information colleagues to improve Standard Response Letters, FAQs, and MIRF process efficiency.
- Act as expert and primary liaison to investigators interested in developing and performing investigator-initiated research.
- Implement the strategic medical plan and resulting tactics in specified centers.
- Onboard and mentor new MSLs/Key Account Managers.
- Support scientific congresses (organizing symposia, coverage, summaries).
- Organize pre-conference company meetings (aligning with Commercial, Compliance, and Clinical Development).
- Stay abreast of current scientific and treatment landscape trends.
- Contribute to the cross-functional Product Team (medical and commercial plan expertise).
- Participate and advise in the planning and execution of scientific/medical advisory boards.
- Serve as a scientific subject matter expert within therapeutic area(s).
Other Duties:
- Understand EU pharma rules (MSL activities, HCP/patient interactions).
- Provide clinical presentations and respond to unsolicited questions in healthcare settings.
- Create and implement territory plans aligned with broader strategies.
- Build and sustain strong relationships with clinical decision-makers.
EXPECTATIONS OF THE JOB:
- Travel: up to 70%
- Hours: 5 days per week
MINIMUM KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:
- Scientific master's degree
- 5-10 years MSL experience in the pharmaceutical industry
- Rare disease experience (Oncology or Neurology preferred)
- Effective presentation of clinical/scientific information (1:1, small group, written)
- Mastery of business software (Veeva CRM, Adobe, Microsoft Office)
- Understanding, review, and communication of complex concepts/technologies
- Collaboration and relationship management skills
